In Bloom!

I'm so excited about the arrival of Spring! I have been a little inactive lately due to some software issues on my new laptop, but everything is sailing smooth now!

My daffodils and poplar trees are in bloom, and I feel like I am coming alive with the season. I'm ready to get my hands and toes in the dirt, take lots of hiking trips, and hit up every yard sale and thrift store available!

On a personal note, I recently changed my hair to pink at the request of my Aunt Sylvia. She had a double mastectomy this morning after being diagnosed with breast cancer recently. I plan on sticking with the pink until she has fully recovered!
As usual, I am doing my weekly etsy feature (although I neglected it recently). This feature is all about Spring: the sights, the scents, and inspirations! Flowers, fresh cut grass, green, yellow, and pretty things!

Snow in Spring

So my cry for Springtime really didn't work out for me. ^_^ We had a few inches of snow dumped on us, which is a rare sight in the South. I've lived in New England in the past, so it isn't a huge deal to me, but I thought it strange that it suddenly decided to snow on Georgia when I was really craving some warm weather.

Additionally, I can't ship out any of my orders until Tuesday--as a result of being snowed in. The PO is closed for George Washington's birthday on Monday. Not complaining! I just want my buyers to be happy and not want to strangle me because they don't have their kewl items yet! *giggles*

Today I'm doing a "Snow in Spring" Etsy feature. I know it's not technically Spring, but my imagination wants it to be! The daffodil shoots are up already in my flower garden, so I'm already marking it on my calendar that it's here. :D Plus I think green and white (and snow and flowers) go so well together, don't you?

Pretty as a Peacock

A friend of mine on facebook cracked me up (and made me feel much better) by telling me I should set my profile picture as a peacock instead of a celebrity--because I don't seem to look like any celebrities out there. I feel honored if I have any resemblance to such a beautiful creature. I even painted my fingernails in peacock style tonight (I think it was a failure though :D).

I may have once said that swans are close to on par with the peacock, but the whole Leda and the Swan thing ruined that for me! Naughty Naughty Zeus! :O So I'm doing a peacock etsy feature! Enjoy!

Persephone Approaching

I decided to take a short break from doing Crying Calypso inventory (have a ton of new items to list tomorrow) and delve a little deeper into my studies. I'm currently taking a Greek mythology elective, and I'm having fun relearning the true Greek myths and their many interpretations.

One of my favourites has always been the story of Persephone (which is really relevant considering Spring is around the corner), Demeter, and Hades-- but my mental translation tends to differ much from many out there. I've always seen Persephone as this ever-changing, mercurial goddess--who had equal responsibility on Earth and in the Underworld--of Rebirth and of Death. I don't feel that her sudden capture was exactly unwelcomed--or that she wanted to live out Eternity making the world bloom and flourish--next to (and likely in the shadow of) her mother, Demeter. Like every woman, Persephone needed this time of reflection (and inflection)  and independence in the Underworld and gladly took on the role of Queen of the Underworld and consort to Hades. After all, what young woman does not dream of being swept away to adventure by a mysterious man on a chariot? Many would even daresay she fell madly in love with her captor (anyone know of the story of her jealous rage directed towards Menthe?).

So, I suppose what I'm trying to get at is that perhaps Persephone should not be immediately given the label of a victim. She achieves a perfect balance of of light and dark--of holding family close to one's heart but remaining independent--vengeance and mercy-- joy and sorrow--of having your cake and eating it too. Demeter could learn a lesson or two from her own daughter if she gave her a chance!

So here this is my Persephone Etsy Feature (I hope you all enjoy). See if you can pick out the symbols from the story (and if you haven't read the myth, you must!)

Mermaid Surprise!

Okay, so I went to Sally's Beauty Supply this afternoon, and they didn't carry anything near tangerine or orange or peach. I was a little frustrated--but thought "Well, fudge it! I'm gonna go turquoise. It's my other favourite colour anyway!" I grabbed a bleach kit and a colour grabber solution plus one tub of Atomic Turquoise. I had forgotten how long and tedious the processing could be, but I made it through! :D So I guess I'll show y'all my experience! :D

Before Lulu (cherry red): I really loved this colour, but I've had it (or very close variations) for the past year and 1/2. Time for a change!

Lulu After Bleaching. I didn't want to damage my hair too much, so I was left with a nice peachy colour after 2 hours. It took me a few minutes to decide whether to leave it or continue on with dye. I really loved the peach, but it made me look very pale. My hazel eyes looked nearly yellow (they are usually blue to green)!

Mermaid Lulu (5 hours later!) : It turned out way better than I expected. The colour grabber made it so the dye didn't even stain my tub. I didn't see much of anything go down the drain besides a white foamy film.
Now let's have a mermaid-turquoise-sea-foam feature! Yay!

Tangerine Dreams

I've had my hair cherry red to raspberry coloured for around a year and a half now, so I think it's time for a change. Plus, everyone seems to start pulling a copycat and doing the same thing I'm doing in due time (does that happen to anyone else, or am I just paranoid?), so I have to do something spontaneous and crazy again. :D Ultimately, tangerine to orangey peach is my hair goal for tomorrow. Headed to Sally's Beauty Supply and then hitting some flea markets in the morning! WEEE!

In the meantime, I'm posting some inspiring tangeriney items from etsy.

Under the Weather Vintage Pillow Feature

This dang head cold just won't let go! I don't have much energy to do any inventory or shoppe updates tonight, but I'm hoping to get to it tomorrow afternoon.

In the meantime, I'm laptopping it in my bed with a pile of pillows propping me up! So let's have a vintage pillow feature! Yay!

p.s. look for some new retro bedding and pillows in my shoppe this week!
